The story of the clutch.

Time for a Renn Wagen pit stop. This only took an hour.

Steve "What do you mean undo the wing bolts first????"

Jamie "I'll just warm me continental breakfast here for a min"

The key to an effective pitstop is concentration. For all your VW work contact Lee Palmer at Kraftwerk- a true professional.

That's the engine out, now to the difficult bit- how to get Dipple's hand out of his pocket.

Kev "What are you looking at?"

Jamie "Right that's the hard work done, where's my reward Dipple?" A mouth's a mouth.

Much deliberation between members " Is there no merit in saving this for second best?"

What we need is someone sensible to test the new clutch.

Job done.

Dub Freeze.

The first event of the season proved to be difficult for the club due to the snow. As anyone who drives a hot bug will know they are difficult to drive in the rain never mind snow. A few of the members made the difficult trip never the less. Rich made the trip in his recently finished 60 Karmann Ghia Coupe. Lisa "The Shmoo" donlon drove her 2276 powered 69 bay and Renn Wagen friend Hazel "betsy" Thomas also made the trip. Lee and Mark Palmer made the trip in there vans. Several other club members and club prospects came to the show, if only to buy parts etc. A good day was had by all.

The renn wagens at Big Bang.

Rich was out for the 4th time this year in his 2332 powered 65 and turned in some very respectful times of 13.3 during fridays racing prior to tearing up his clutch at the start line on the third run. Help was at hand in the form of Jamie (Kaferboy) and a replacement clutch plate was couriered down in person to the event and replaced in situ within an hour for the cruise home. Rich is currently in pole position for club's "most raced" at the end of the year.

Lisa (the shmoo) took her 69 deluxe early bay for her first run of the season and congratulations!!! a new PB of 16.5. Lisa drove hard all weekend and cruised home (with a little sleep in the services). Those John Walklett built engines always do the biz.

Following the damage to Steve Turnball's 2028cc motor at VW action 09. His 69 bay was out for some shakedown runs. Although no improvement on his PB of 16.8 on this occasion, steve drove ferociously all weekend before heading home "street and strip" style. If steves cool looking bay doesn't demand enought glances already, the baby seat and doll in the passenger seat raised more than a few eyebrows from spectators in the stands as they tore down the strip.

Friend of the renn wagen's and driver of the 61 ragtop "wrong un" (named due to a scooby conversion) Hazel towed her caravan down to the pod and unhitched it transforming it into the renn wagen's canteen for the weekend (oatcakes all round) then turned in some great times on the strip. Great job Hazel.

Not all good news......Steve Milward out in his recently upgraded 61 had to abort his trip halfway down to Santa Pod due to a suspicious oil leak. Steve will no doubt be out to fight another day soon enough. Although Steve did make the trip down to watch and support thanks to prospect Mark Palmer and his Renn Wagen pit vehicle T4. Oh and Mable also made the trip, naughty girl.

John Walklett (63 ragtop) and Nessa Walklett were also forced to miss Big Bang due to the volcanic ash cloud leaving him stranded in Lanzarote. Even the copious amounts of sun and stella couldn't compensate for the lost opportunity to compete for the show and go trophy, something John wins on a regular basis. Look out for John later in the season where he will be hoping to beat his awesome 11.6 ET.

Big Bang as always proved to be a very enjoyable weekend for the club, a chance to meet up with friends, share a beer (and one very large bottle of whisky) or several and tear the strip up.

Mini's vs Beetles

Rich drove the round trip (with renn wagen friend Hazel) to York Raceway to compete with the mini's on easter weekend. Unfortunately the weather wasn't kind to the event and periods of rain limited the amount of racing. Due to the first event of the year the track was a bit more trying than usual but the beetles came out on top winning the event 10 wins to 4.
Always great to race alongside the guys from ACE.

The main highlight of the day for Rich was spinning his 65 bug in 2nd gear across the track and closely mising the barrier, resulting in facing the wrong direction.

Check out the in car video.

James 'Peach' Cornes motor coming together

Peach has been gradually building up this ripper for some time now. The long block is based around a CB supplied aluminium race case and houses a forged 82mm stroke crank, H beam rods and a Webcam 86B camshaft. 94mm jugs & slugs hang out of the case, along with Manton pushrods supplied by fellow Rennwagen man Poe B. Topping off each side is a set of Steve Tims' excellent Stage 2 heads with 42 x 37.5 valves, and 1.4 rockers to suit the cam. The longblock was assemebled by yet another RW member, Johnny Walklett. Induction will be by means of twin 44IDF's, and the exhaust is taken care of by a full stainless speedshop system.

All of the above will be finding its way into James Coooool Java green '66 over the coming weeks.

First change to the club ET board this year...

And its fitting that its Richie Moss who's trading times, as he's already been out to the strip 3 times. Not bad given the harsh weather we've experienced so far Rich!

Richies car runs a 2332cc IDA'd motor through a stock ratio built gearbox. All times to date have been on plain old street tyres, but Rich has a set of slicks that he's going to strap on as soon as he's run into the 12's on treads. The car also sees regular use on the streets of Congleton and around Stoke on Trent.

Well done Rich!

Other club updates:

Kev Donlon, current ET board no.1 is progressing well with his engine rebuild following the disastrous end to his 2009 season. He's also been busy with an extremely nice VW T4 camper conversion, to make the nights in the pits crying over broken engine parts more bearable.

John Walklett has been working on his wife Vanessa's Ghia seen further down this page, a car which is sure to do well on the show circuit when completed. It shouldn't do to badly on the strip either!

Paul Beardmore will be tearing into a rebuild of the front end of his turbo'd bug in readiness for what will probably one of only a couple of outings for the car later this year at York, due to Pauls hectic work schedule this year.

My own 54 Oval was unfortunately sold late last year, but a 73 bug is currently undergoing restoration and will be receiving the same 2276 turbocharged motor that I ran last year.

John parton is working the minor gremlins out of his Oval bug in an effort to improve his already quick ET times from last season, even talking about changes to cams and compression ratios in search of more power. Go John!

Steve Milwards bug has been subject to some fairly major revisions over the off season, with new gearbox and ignition systems being the most noticeable amongst a whole raft of detail changes. Having driven the car both before and after this work I feel certain we'll see a great improvement in his times this season.

Steve Turnbull has finished spannering on the motor in his beautiful 69 Bay, having floated and bent his valves last year ending his season early. He'll be back out and on the strip at the upcoming 'Big Bang' show held at Santa Pod racestrip.

Karl Whitehurst's split is currently undergoing a fairly major makeover, currently being in bare metal! He assures me that when it comes back out it will be better and faster than ever (and he assures me quicker than Mike Riley's too!).

Amogst the prospect members of the club, Peach continues to work on getting his freshly completed 2276 into his bug, Steve Plants bug is nearing completion of the bodywork, Gary Priest is ploughing through the welding on his 1303 Euro Looker, work continues apace on Jamie Wettons 54 Bug at Reichspeed and Chris Lovatts mean standard Bug is looking like a dead cert for some strip action this year. Will be great to have you along guys.

Johnny's new 56 cal looker

I have never looked at Johns ride for the past few years - currently 2nd quickest, but long time #1 car in the club - as being anything less than immaculate, a 63 ragtop bug built in the true cal look tradition. It's packed a hot motor and built box from day one and has always been as clean underneath as it is on top - however, if you know John, you do come away with the feeling that he's a bit of a perfectionist, having netted trophies in the past for other cars he's built (stock restorations and custom). So, with that in mind, I wasn't surprised when I saw some pictures of his new car. I'll let the shots do the talking:

Over 10,000 hits!!!!

Its been a bit slack of late on here as we're busily working away on an all new SAS RENNWAGENS website, but check for more updates later....
